The Oak Woods
Oil on canvas, 121 x 92 cm, unframed
This painting was inspired by personal photographs of ancient oak forests in the Sunart area of the Western Highlands of Scotland. The trees were covered in lichen and their branches were full of character - twists and turns, like spindly limbs. The lone figure stands in quiet contemplation of the majestic trees.
The painting's surface is varied in texture with the slow accretion of layers of paint, creating a dense and rich surface to enjoy.
